Counties of Origin

Scandinavia, Norway as well as Sweden have rich histories in the fiber arts and it is no wonder that such a useful tool would come from these countries as well. However you pronounce the word it is a very hand tool for any knitter/crocheter who doesn't want a big contraption taking up space it a work room. Just slip it into you work bag and wind your yarn on the go.
In the past this tool was given as gifts as well as showing the skill of a young craftsmen to his intended.
I don't know when these date back to, but I can imagine them in the middle ages and as far back as biblical times. Where you find yarn I'm sure you found this unique tool as well.
Useful to know, the nostepinne is a center pull cake, without changing the twist of the yarn as you work.
Winding Directions: Step 1-4
1. First secure the yarn to the nostepinne with either an elastic or by tying at the midway point were you see the ridges.
2. Wind yarn while holding the nostepinne horizontally about (1 to 2 inches wide by 3/4 inch thickness). You'll want a thickness to wrap yarn on an angle in the next step.
3. While holding the nostepinne on an angle you will wrap the yarn lengthwise catching the top and bottom ridge while slowly turning the nostepinne.
4. When finished winding, tuck the yarn end-in to the side and slip the yarn cake off the nostepinne.
Step 1 & 2: Secure the yarn to the nostepinne and wrap around until you have a thick center.
Step 3: Holding the nostepinne at an angle catching the top and bottom edges as you slowly turn the stick.
Shaping the cake as you turn, takes practice.
Keep turning a bit at a time as you wrap.
The final shaping as you square off the ends to make them flatter.
Step 4: Tuck in the end to the side.
You are finished, now slide your newly formed cake off the nostepinne and you are ready to work with your center pull cake.
